For this small project my aim was to design a simple suitable for all app that can be used as an interactive travel guide in major cities. I decided not to follow the common ‘map app’ style, and instead opted for a more personal ‘tour guide’ approach, almost as if you’re walking around a city with someone telling you what sights are around you. The app can rely heavily on simple location information and GPS technology available in most smartphones.
I focused on simple colours, keeping a two tone style throughout each guide, to help make the app a little easy on the eye and not simply a wash of typical digital colours. I enjoy reading travel books and guides as hard copies, and took inspiration from the simple style and easy to read through guides. Bearing this in mind, I decided to show limited information on each page of the app, which would change when the phones location moves around.
The app will also feature in-play transportation advice, for example what bus to take and what time it arrives, and whether that would arrive at the chosen destination faster than any other form of transport. It will also feature a restaurant finder (with ratings, address and a weblink) and a “take me to see…” featuring a guided tour that will in turn result in the user reaching the destination landmark of their choice.
